When you download files from internet, notably those EXE, DMG application files, you may see a SHA checksum associated with the file you are going to download. The file hash in place is to ensure the file integrity. If file corruption or tampering occurs in the transfer process, the file hash of the downloaded file wonât match the provided file checksum. In a related article, we showed how you can verify software downloads via file hash on Windows computer. Today, we will discuss how you can check SHA checksums on a Mac.
How to Check SHA Checksums, SHA1, 224, 256, 384, or 512 on Mac?
To generate or verify a hash, you simply browse to the file of choice, select either MD5 or SHA-1, and click either Copy to generate the hash or Verify to check its integrity. A Paste function. SHA 1 fingerprint of keystore certificate. How to find Debug signing certificate SHA 1 for firebase app? Sometimes you want this SHA 1 fingerprint of keysto.
Mac users can check the SHA hash of a file without any hash or checksum verifier. You can run a single line of command in the Terminal on Mac to quickly check a fileâs checksum in Mac OS.
Terminal is an application shipped as part of OS X. You can find and launch it from Launchpad >> Others folder or Applications >> Utilities folder.
Verify SHA1 hash on Mac
Type shasum followed by a single space in the Terminal window, open the folder where the file you want to verify is located in Finder, drag the file from its folder to the Terminal window, you will see the full path to the file in Terminal window. Now you just need to press Enter to execute the command and find out the SHA checksum of the file.
Check SHA-256 hash or else on Mac
What to do if it is a SHA224, 256, 384, or 512 checksum? You need to use the -a flag in the command. For example, if you want to check SHA-256 checksum on Mac, type shasum -a 256 (drag and drop your file here), and press Enter to execute the command. See below screenshot.
You can also use this method to verify SHA224, SHA384 or SHA512 on Mac.
Another way to check file hash on Mac
You can verify the authenticity of a downloaded file with âopenssl dgst -sha /full_path_to_fileâ command in the Terminal on Mac.
-sha to use the sha message digest algorithm
-sha1 to use the sha1 message digest algorithm -sha224 to use the sha224 message digest algorithm -sha256 to use the sha256 message digest algorithm -sha384 to use the sha384 message digest algorithm -sha512 to use the sha512 message digest algorithm
